Mirski palace and park complex

 

Mirski palace and park complex is a monument of architecture of the 16-20th centuries. It was erected in1500-1510 in the eastern part of the village of urban type Mir (Korelichi district) by a magnate Yuri Ilinich in the forms of late Belarusian Gothic. From 1508 it belonged to the Radzivills. The castle of regular type, in the plan it is a rectangle, similar to a square, encircled with ramparts with the height nearly 10m with a ditch. Thick walls are flanked with 4 many-tier towers and in some places are covered with small hipped roofs. In the middle of the western wall entrance 6-tiered tower was situated, a drawbridge led to it. The entry closed with a barbican and lifting grille. The walls were cut by loopholes and embrasures for hand shooting and guns, ended with galleries. Building technique is combined: with gothic and renaissance elements. At the bottom it is made of crushed stone, upper- of striated brick. Decorative decision is based on the contrast of open brick laying and white plastered bays with different arched endings. To the northern and eastern wall adjoined one-storied prince’s palace with large vaulted rooms and cellar. In 1580-90 the palace was built in Renaissance style (the architect M. Zborovsky), 2 more floors were built, the towers are adapted for living. Nearly 40 rooms were decorated with carving, modeling, glazed tile, goods of luxury produced at Radzivillovs’ manufactories. In the 17th century to the south of “Italian Garden” was laid out, the park of regular type with the system of paths, greenhouse and ponds. The castle was damaged during the sieges of 1655 and 1706, while Barski confederation period. In 1812 there was a battle between French cavalry of Marshal Davu and rear-guard of the 2nd Russian army- M. Platov Cossack cavalry. At the result the palace was plundered and burned, the north-eastern tower was denotated. In the second half of the 19th century it belonged to the Vitgensteins, at the beginning of the 20th century- to the Svyatopolk-Mirskye. On the basis of Italian garden a new regular park with a rich dendrologic composition and presence of a number of aliens was created. In 1914 a burial-vault of the Svyatopolk-Myrskye (arch. R. Marfeld) in the style of modern was built. Conservation and restoration works were conducted in the 1870s, 1920-30s and at the end of 1980 till present time. It is a historical value of European significance
