The National Library

The National Library. The concept of the building is built on the interpretation of the library as a temple of education with the use of complex architectural and artistic means (architects V. Kramarenko and M.Vinogradov, 2005). The scale of construction, its symbolic content and place in an urban structure corresponds to the image-bearing role of the National Library as a public symbol of the modern era. The architectural solution can be traced to the orientation of the classic prototype of centric monumental structures with the image striving for conciliarism. The dynamic element is introduced into a static solution by the solution of entrance zone, representing the composition of planes tilted at different angles - glass and faced with granite. The volume-space solution of the library is a composition with three-four-storey stepped stylobate inscribed in relief, above which a twenty-storey volume of the book storage, the surface of which is made of solid glass. The entrance lobby is blocked by a glass lantern. The main concept of the internal space is the creation of a central multi-lighting atrium, which houses reading catalogues, covered with roof lights. The structural diagram of high-rise volume is a spatial structure, formed by the nucleus and the diaphragms of hardness, flat disks of ceilings, columns, beams strapping. The role of the library building as a landmark facility is reinforced by the works of monumental and decorative and easel art. Figuratively thematic content of large-scale paintings, installed in the space of the atrium, is directed to the cultural and historical heritage of Belarus and is characterized by the epic sound (leading painter -B. Krivoblotsky, authors - A. Dranets, A. Luchinovich, co-authors - V. Logovsky, Yu. Podolin, I. Lukin). In the galleries of the first and second floors the easel works of Belarusian artists on the themes of the historical past of Belarus and its cultural heritage are available. In the decoration of the reading rooms and the cafe stained glass windows are used (artists V. Logovsky, B. Pozniak). The symbolic role of the building is reinforced by the installation of the monument to F. Skorina (sculptor A. Dranets, architect A. Kamluk) in front of it.
